The new project, which is located at Abura near Cape Coast, would serve as a model of a modernised system of education.

 The school

The University of Cape Coast Junior High School was established in 1987 by the university to primarily take care of the children of the UCC staff, as well as other individuals.

The school which started with an enrolment of 85 pupils can now boast of more than 1,750 pupils.

Addressing the gathering, the chairman of the Implementation Committee of the school, Prof. Edward Marfo-Yiadom, said the aim was to mobilise resources to build the preschool before the 2016/2017 academic year, while the rest of the basic school continued.

 Overstretched facilities

For her part, the Headmistress of the University Junior High School, Mrs Kate Frimpong, said the facilities of the school were over stretched and so a university basic school annex was welcome news, explaining that it would ease the pressure on existing facilities.

“Everybody wants to bring his or her ward to the university’s school and this was what motivated management to expand”, she said.

She pleaded with the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and benevolent individuals to continue to support the school.

Commendation

The Vice-Chancellor of the school, Prof. Dominic D. Kuupole, encouraged the implementation committee to work hard to make it possible for admission from the next academic year.

He lauded the initiative of the management of the basic school, PTA and the council for their support towards the project, adding that the administration of the school would continue to offer support to the basic school project.
