Involvement of CSOs

The 18-month project dubbed ‘Promoting Transparency and Accountability in Education” is to ensure greater involvement of civil society organisations (CSOs) and community members in the management of educational resources and to provide support and promote further accountability among 250 Ghana Education Service (GES) district managers in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions.

The US Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Richard Jackson, signed on behalf of the US government, while Mrs Rosemond Kumah, the NNED Executive Committee Chairperson initialled on behalf of her organisation at a brief ceremony at the forecourt of NNED office in Tamale last Friday.

Mr Jackson was on a site visit to the Northern Region to inspect projects and interact with beneficiaries of USAID-sponsored projects in the region.

Laudable partnership

In a brief remark, he lauded the partnership between NNED and the USAID, aimed at promoting quality education in the three regions of the north through greater accountability and transparency.

Mr Jackson, who said he was a teacher before joining the US Foreign Service, noted that improving education would help children to become useful and responsible citizens of the country, and added that high quality education would provide children with the qualities that they needed to serve their communities.

“With NNED’s extensive network and considerable experience of working to improve education here in Northern Ghana, I am confident we will make great gains in ensuring every child in even the remotest villages to benefit from the education they deserve”, he stated.

Quality education

Mrs Kumah, for her part, pledged to use the funds as stated in the agreement to promote quality education at the basic level of education in the three regions of the north, and added that NNED had the requisite manpower, skills and experience to deliver on its mandate.

NNED with its headquarters in Tamale, is an NGO which works to increase the quality of and access to education in northern Ghana through advocacy, resource mobilisation and the harmonisation of stakeholders’ efforts.
