Trainee teachers asked to use social media productively

The Principal of the Tamale College of Education (TACE), Dr Sulemana Iddrisu, has admonished trainee teachers to use social media productively and to capitalise on its positive aspects in their studies and professional development.

Making the statement at the 13th matriculation of the college held in Tamale in the Northern Region, he also cautioned the trainee teachers to be mindful of the negative implications of social media, such as using the medium to engage in illicit relationships, pornography and cyber crimes.

“Rule the social media and don’t allow yourselves to be ruled by it,” he advised.

Admissions

Touching on admissions, Dr Iddrisu said the college received a total of 1,792 applications for  the 2016/2017 academic year, but explained that though 1,290 were qualified, the college admitted only 575, which comprised 387 males and 188 females, due to constraints of space.

“Though we have tried our best to admit as many students as possible, this has not been possible in view of the limited number of facilities to properly train the students,” he stated.

Dr Iddrisu, however, raised a concern that out of the number that  applied for admission to the school, 143 had their results doctored.

“Out of the total applicants, 143 candidates had their results doctored in one way or the other. Such candidates’ results have been flagged as suspicious by our rigorous online system,” he explained.

Advice

He, therefore, implored the trainee teachers to devote much of their time to their books, indicating that the college, early this semester, had withdrawn six first-year students for poor academic performance.

“Your education should not narrow you to the mastery of only content knowledge and professional skills but your education should inculcate in you the power to develop strategies that will help maximise your functionality in the school system and in life beyond school,” Dr Iddrisu stated.
