Tobinco builds 2 schools in Volta Region to mark 50th birthday

The Executive Chairman of Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Limited (TBL), Mr Samuel Amo Tobbin, last Friday handed over school blocks worth GH¢500,000 to two institutions in the Volta Region.

In the Akatsi North District, he inaugurated a six-unit classroom block with an office and a store for the Elinam International Foundation School at Ave-Dakpa.

He also handed over an 80-bed dormitory block, including two supervisors’ flats, to the Three Kings Special School at Bator in the North Tongu District.

Both buildings were donated to mark his 50th birthday and were also meant to uplift the standard of living of the vulnerable and needy in society.

Asked why he chose two towns in the Volta Region, Mr Tobbin said his decision to build the facilities was based on his desire to serve communities in need.

Ave-Dakpa

At Ave-Dakpa, a teary school principal, Mr Mathias Agamah, who could not hide his joy, lauded Mr Tobbin for realising the need to celebrate his birthday with the students and people of Ave-Dakpa.

Mr Agamah said the school formerly accommodated its students in a dilapidated structure, making teaching and learning difficult.

He said even though the school had limited logistics, it attracted children from neighbouring Togo, Benin, as well as Cote d’Ivoire, thus, putting pressure on its facilities.

“From 25 students at the beginning, we now have 450  and our facilities are not enough to accommodate the children, especially those in the boarding house,” he said.

Mr Agama said the inauguration of the new school block would go a long way to improve teaching and learning, as well as increase enrolment in the school.

He appealed for the construction of a dormitory block to accommodate orphans, as well as a school bus to convey children from neighbouring towns and villages to the school.

He also asked for a computer laboratory to help train the students in Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Battor

For students of  the Three Kings Special School at Battor, the provision of the new dormitory block was a source of comfort for them.

The Headmaster of the school, Nana Martin Godzah, said the new facility would help increase enrolment and project the government’s efforts at increasing access to education at the basic level for the visually impaired.

The chiefs and people of Battor thanked Mr Tobbin for his initiative and urged other individuals, as well as organisations, to go to the aid of the people in the community.

Mr Tobbin and his wife, Mrs Mercy Tobbin, were decorated with beads and smeared with powder by the queenmother of the town to signify their acceptance and recognition by the people of the community.

Support the needy

In his remarks, Mr Tobbin said supporting the needy formed part of his initiative to complement the government’s efforts at improving the educational sector, especially in the rural communities.

“I decided to celebrate my birthday with the deprived in society so that they too will feel some sense of belonging and also know that people in the big cities think about them and love them,” he said.
