Tetrefu Primary School block in bad shape

The lives of about 400 pupils of the Tetrefu D/A Primary School in the Bosomtwe District are in danger as their six-classroom block has completely deteriorated and hangs loosely on broken pillars.

It is feared that the block, built about 62 years ago, exposes the lives of the pupils and their teachers to danger since it could collapse any moment .

The structure, which has not seen any renovation since it was built, has developed cracks on the walls and all the pillars that hold it together have developed deep cracks, leaving it on the verge of collapse.

Nadmo

The seriousness of the imminent danger posed by the building has made the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) write to the district assembly to have the building rehabilitated to avert any calamity.

During an inspection on the facility in February this year, the Bosomtwe District NADMO asked the assembly to provide cement and iron rods to the school to renovate the building.

In a letter written by the District Coordinator of NADMO, Mr John Raphael Anane, to the assembly, he asked the assembly to respond quickly to the demand in order to avert any disaster.

Community initiative

The community, through its own initiative, is constructing a new six-classroom block which is almost complete.

According to the queenmother of Tetrefu, Nana Serwaa Ampem, lack of funds had been a major challenge hampering the completion of the new school building.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic after inspecting the building, she appealed to the government to come to their aid and help prevent a calamity befalling them.

District Assembly

When contacted, the District Chief Executive for Bosomtwe, Madam Veronica Antwi-Adjei, confirmed the situation but said the assembly would soon send a technical assessment team to find out what could be done about it.

She ruled out any hope of building a new school block for the community, since there was not enough funds for it now.
