Technical universities asked to improve skills

Graduates of technical universities have been advised to improve their skills to meet the challenges and opportunities of the dynamic technical industry with the aim of forming a highly skilled local workforce able to support the development of local industry sectors.

The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Accra Technical University (ATU), Professor Ralph Kinston Asabere, who made the call at the 16th congregation ceremony of the ATU in Accra recently, therefore, appealed to the government to ensure that all the technical universities were well resourced with infrastructure, logistics and adequate human resource.

Prof. Asabere also appealed to the Minister of Education and other stakeholders, namely the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET), to provide funds for the expansion of existing structures and logistics, in anticipation of the large number of students expected as a result of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

He further asked that a Wi-Fi Project that was initiated by the National Information Agency to enhance quality education among the student populace be revived.

For her part, the Minister of Communication, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, said the government was working to upgrade all technical and vocational institutions into enhanced technical and vocational education (TVET) in support of the sustainable growth of the country.

Government’s plans

Reading an address on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful outlined plans by the government to invest in skills training and apprenticeship under the industrialisation agenda to create jobs especially for the youth.

“By this decision, the government is bringing all the vocational and technical training units of 16 ministries, which are currently offering some form of skills development under the Ministry of Education,” she announced.

She said attention would be given to ensure mobilisation, certification and regulation in order to ensure that technical education became the number one choice of the youth.

Challenges

Addressing the challenges facing the educational sector, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful stated that efforts were being made to replace vacancies created as a result of retirements, resignations, death and other circumstances.

Addressing the graduates, she urged them to be innovative and get involved in the national entrepreneurship and innovation plan which was recently launched to have access to mentoring and business development services.
