After an amazing presentation of the most creative and brilliant ideas at the grand finale, Messers Nutakor Eldad, Roger Agorsor and Patrick Kumeshina, the three members of Team Tripod, successfully defeated three other teams from various universities nationwide.

The Deputy Director, Tertiary Education Directorate of the Ministry of Education, Mr Cephas Adjei-Mensah, said the ministry took “delight in such initiatives geared towards reducing youth unemployment by providing students with the requisite skills and knowledge to make them more employable."

According to him, it was crucial for students in the country to continue learning even after completing school in order for them to develop their talents, saying one could learn by asking probing questions that would enable the one to solve problems.

Mr Adjei-Mensah pledged the ministry’s interest in the outcomes of the competition, adding that it was important for the students not to limit themselves to the Ghanaian or African context but think globally.

Annual student competition

The Human Resource Director of Unilever West Africa, Mr Michael Otchere-Duah, said “the competition, launched in Ghana in 2013, has become a highly patronised annual student competition with the aim of exposing students to the real business world, developing talents and improving youth employability in Ghana.”

He further stated that the Idea Trophy did this by giving students the opportunity to come up with ideas that would foster the behavioural trait of confidence, while doing more to enable them to work as a team, brainstorm, think out of the box, as well as learn new skills.

This year’s edition of the competition was powered by Unilever’s Closeup brand.

The students were given professional guidance and training on business plan development, brand management, consumer understanding, presentation skills, business etiquette, personal effectiveness and leadership skills and tasked with the responsibility for developing a communication and marketing plan for Closeup to create social change in the lives of consumers.

Grand Prize

Team Tripod took home the winning prize of a trophy, iPhones and a certificate for each team member.

Team Indomitable came second. Both winners, aside from the prizes, also got an all-expense paid trip to South Africa to represent Ghana in the next phase of the competition where they will be competing with students from Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa at the Unilever Africa Idea Trophy Competition.

The African winners will represent the continent at the Global Future Leaders’ League competition in London next year.
