Teachers call off strike

Christian Addai-Poku - President of NAGRAT

Teachers have called off their indefinite industrial action until further notice.

This was made known at a joint news conference held in Accra Tuesday by the various teacher unions - Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate  Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) and the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU).

The members of GNAT and NAGRAT embarked on a strike on Monday March 18, 2013 to press home their demand for the early resolution of matters concerning their conditions of service.

They raised concerns about the non-payment of vehicle maintenance allowance from 2012 till date and delays in resolving outstanding issues related to promotions.

They also expressed  dissatisfaction with the fact that the FWSC had questioned the legal status of the GES management to negotiate proposals in the collective agreement with GNAT and NAGRAT.

A series of meetings were held  between the government and the leaders of the teacher unions to address the concerns.

On Monday March 25, 2013 President John Dramani Mahama met the leadership of the teachers to discuss the strike and the way forward.

The president gave the assurance that the government was willing to sit down with workers, including teachers, to resolve all outstanding issues with their salaries and allowances.

However, he said the government would give the workers "what is reasonable within the national envelope".

The national council of the teacher unions met Tuesday and subsequently resolved to call off the strike.
