Teachers attend creative art workshop

Teachers from 40 public and private schools in the Greater Accra Region have undergone a one-day training in how to use pictures and other images to teach students.

Dubbed the creative art workshop, the training focused on equipping teachers with basic creative skills to enable them to use pictorial images for teaching and learning.

The workshop was on the theme: “Training teachers to be playful to enhance children’s learning”. It was organised by Devio Art Centre.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Founder of Devio Art Centre, Ms Lily Kudzro, said the rationale behind the organisation of the workshop was to equip teachers with the tools on creative arts.

“We conducted a study and realised that most of the teaching done in the classrooms were too rigid. This was making it difficult for students to properly understand,” she said.

Ms Kudzro said unless teachers adopted other methods such as the use of images to teach, it would be extremely difficult for students to become creative in their thinking.

Students’ creativity

She explained that creativity, ingenuity and innovation were the keys to success in the evolving global economy, adding “in order to prepare young people for work in the 21st century, educators must cultivate students’ creativity.

"Many of the fastest-growing jobs and emerging industries rely on workers' creative capacity—the ability to think unconventionally, probe into issues, imagine new scenarios and produce astonishing work," Ms Kudzro said.

She added that students must learn how to imagine the unimaginable and build their creative skills.

That, Ms Kudzro said, would expose them to the talents they needed to attain their future ambitions.
