Teachers asked to use ICT to upgrade themselves

A Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Adutwum, has urged teachers to take advantage of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to upgrade their skills.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of an ICT training programme for teachers in Accra last Friday, he said ICT had transformed every aspect of education and teachers, who were crucial in the educational set-up, must be abreast of the phenomenon.

“If teachers are not exposed to ICT, how can they expose their students to it? Teachers should begin to explore the opportunities related to ICT to upgrade their skills and guide their students, so that at the end of the day technology can enhance teaching and learning,’’ he said.

Training programme

The two-week training programme on ICT was organised by the Academic City College (ACC), a private university college, in partnership with the Ghana Education Service (GES).

It was attended by 100 junior high school (JHS) teachers from more than 20 schools in the Greater Accra Region.

The training was aimed at sharpening the skills of the teachers to enable them to master current trends relating to the topics under the ICT curriculum.

The 100 JHS teachers were the third batch to have benefited from the training, as 150 JHS and senior high school (SHS) teachers had already benefited from it.

Commendation

Dr Adutwum reiterated the importance of ICT, adding that “our lives are now linked with technology in numerous ways”.

He challenged teachers to embrace every opportunity that sought to enhance their knowledge in ICT.

“Even though teachers had learnt ICT in the training colleges and the universities, they must take advantage of every opportunity that will broaden their knowledge in ICT because technology is evolving,’’ he said.

He lauded the ACC for providing the training free of charge, describing it as a great service to the nation.

“It is so heartwarming to see that the ACC had taken this initiative and teachers have taken advantage of it to upgrade their skills, so that they can teach well. Such is the demonstration of commitment of the teachers and I commend them,’’ he said.

CSR

The Rector of the ACC, Dr Abhishek Tyagi, said the training programme was part of the corporate social responsibility of the university college.

The college, he said, decided to reach out to the GES on how best the ACC could help teachers benefit from its world-class expertise in ICT.

“We decided that the best way was to organise a training programme during the vacation period to enable teachers to take full advantage of it. This is a free training programme which only required the teachers to make themselves available,’’ he said.

He explained that the college was having further discussions with the GES to include more teachers and also extend the training to cover other subject areas.
