Tamale Poly appeals for lifting of ban : On accreditation of new programmes

The Rector of the Tamale Polytechnic, Professor Abdulai Salifu Asuro, has appealed to the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) and the National Accreditation Board (NAB) to lift the ban on the accreditation of new technical programmes in the country’s technical institutions.

He noted that, industries were yearning for more technical manpower but following the ban, the polytechnics would not be able to train such students, which, he observed, could hinder the growth of industries.

“I wish to use this medium to appeal to the NCTE and NAB to reconsider their decision because the country’s industries are yearning for the technical manpower to propel their growth”, he indicated.

Matriculation

Prof. Asuro made the call in a speech read on his behalf at the matriculation ceremony for the first batch of degree students of the institution in Tamale last Saturday.

He said, industries would only grow when the technical institutions were given the needed accreditation to train more manpower.

He said although the Tamale Polytechnic wanted to run programmes such as B-Tech Mechanical Engineering, B-Tech Construction and Engineering Management, B-Tech Hospitality and Tourism Management and B-Tech Business Administration, none of the programmes had been approved by both NCTE and the NAB.

Admission

Prof. Asuro said even though the school received 55 applications for its B-Tech programmes, including Accounting with Computing and Agricultural Engineering, they could only admit 43 students.

Out of the number, 29 were offered admission to study B-Tech Accounting with Computing while the rest would pursue B-Tech Agricultural Engineering students.

He expressed the hope that the successful students would live up to expectation, adding that, “we will continue to mount practical, job-targeted B-Tech programmes”.
