Tamale College of Education holds third congregation
The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed-Muniru Limuna, has called on all stakeholders in education, especially teachers, to help reverse the falling standards of education at the basic level in the region.

According to him, the region performed poorly in the last Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), hence the need to reverse the trend.
Alhaji Limuna made the call in an address read on his behalf by his deputy, Alhaji A.B.A Fusieni, at the third congregation of the Tamale College of Education (TACE) in Tamale, the Northern regional capital, over the weekend.
A total of 686 newly trained teachers graduated from the college, which is affiliated to the University of Cape Coast (UCC), and they were awarded Diploma in Basic Education. Only one student obtained first class, 61 had second class upper, 294 obtained second class lower, 257 had third class and 73 recorded passes.
The graduates were from the regular and the sandwich school for the 2011/2012 and the 2012/2013 academic years respectively.
Regional Co-ordinating Council
Alhaji Limuna said the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), as part of measures to address the abysmal performance of students in the BECE, had organised an education forum to seek solutions to the issue.
He said in all the discussions at the forum, it was clear that teachers played important roles, and, therefore, asked the management of the college to support their efforts to address the problem.
“We cannot afford to be left behind as a region. Indeed, historical circumstances have already put us behind the rest of the country, and if we do not work hard, we will be left behind perpetually,” the regional minister stated.
He gave the assurance that the government would continue to fulfil its commitment to increase intake of teacher trainees in the existing colleges of education, adding that it was against this background that the government stopped the payment of teacher trainee allowances in order to upgrade facilities in the colleges and also expand existing colleges in order to befit its new status as a tertiary institution.
Directive of Ministry of Education
The Principal of the college, Kasulana Alhaji Yakubu Bukari, indicated that the college had complied with the directive of the Ministry of Education to increase intake of first year students this academic year.
He, therefore, appealed to the government to assist the college to rehabilitate the existing student dormitories and provide the college with classroom blocks and modern halls of residence for students and staff to address the challenges confronting the institution in terms of accommodation.
The Chairman of the Governing Council of the college, Alhaji Huudu Yahaya, in an address on his behalf, commended the students for their performance, and urged them to give their best in all their endeavours.
