Tamale business college marks 10th anniversary
Business College International (BCI), a private institution in Tamale, has marked its 10th anniversary with a call on parents and society to put an end to the abuse of the girl-child.

The Director of the school, Mr Ibrahim Taimako Shamsudeen, decried the attitude of some parents who saw the education of the girl-child as a waste of family resources, forcing some girls who were desirous of furthering their education to engage in “indirect prostitution”, just to pay their fees.
Citing cases in his school to buttress his point, Mr Shamsudeen said a female student who spent a night out of school and was caught confessed that she had to spend the night with her boyfriend before she could get her school fees from him since her parents were not capable of paying the fees.
“In another case, a family who refused to pay the fees of their daughter who was being supported by her boyfriend later praised the girl for being good by having only one boyfriend,” he added.
He said many young females were engaging in all manner of ‘hanky-panky acts’ as a result of necessity but not out of choice.
He, therefore, asked all stakeholders to see to the proper development of the girl-child in order to ensure the building of strong families which would later translate into good and united societies.
Touching on the progress of the school, the Director said BCI started in 2003 with 200 students in makeshift structures but the school was now being housed in a three-storey building with hostel facilities for all the 720 students that are on its register.
He said the school’s performance in the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) had been improving steadily, adding that the school recorded 94 per cent in the recent WASSCE results released by the West African Examinations Council.
He said with the support and blessing of his mother, Dr Hajia Salamatu Ibrahim Taimako, an educational fund known as the Taimako Educational Fund was established to cater for needy students.
He added that many of such students had been assisted by the fund since its inception, adding that, “last year alone, we assisted 44 students at various levels.”
