Swedru Senior High old students support alma mater

Past students of the Swedru Senior High School (SWESCO) at Agona Swedru in the Central Region have held a maiden Founders Day celebration to reflect on the contributions of the founder of the school, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as the First Education Trust school to be built in 1959 in Ghana.
The ceremony was used to officially hand over a newly constructed GH¢70,000 13-seater public place of convenience for the girls dormitory, which was funded by the old students.

Old studenta at the event included the pioneer batch of 1962.
The 1990 Year Group, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary since leaving the school, also inaugurated coal burners for the school’s kitchen as part of their contribution towards the development of their alma mater.

President of Association
The National President of the SWESCO Old Students Association, Dr Asare Akuffo, said at a durbar after the inauguration of the projects that the event was to enable the past students of the school to become particularly abreast of the challenges facing their alma mater, so as to devise means of partnering with the administrators to address them.
According to him, the old students are part of the stakeholders of the school and there is the need to promote a close relationship between the school authorities and the past students for the development of the school.
He added that the national association visited the school recently and realised that the girls dormitory needed a better public place of convenience. They, therefore, mobilised resources from members of the association and managed to construct a new one.

Advice to students
Dr Akuffo urged the students to take their studies seriously and reminded them of the need to excel in the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) in order to achieve their goals of pursuing knowledge and skills in tertiary institutions.
The Chairman of the Board of Governors of the School, Mr Bernard Joe Appeah, bemoaned the recent poor performance of the students in Core Mathematics in the WASSCE and called on the current students to be serious with the subject to enable them to pursue higher education.
He advised them to strive to acquire the right results at the end of their three-year stay in the school in order to justify the huge investments being made in them by their parents and the government.

Headmistress
The Headmistress of the school, Mrs Alberta Obiriwa Rigg-Stewart, thanked the past students for their resolve to support the school and expressed gratitude to the board chairman and the immediate past Headmistress of the school, Mrs Agnes Letitia Hawkson, for their efforts towards the completion of the school’s assembly hall project which had been going on for the past 30 years.
