Support running of schools

The Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Pre-tertiary Education, Mr Alex Kyeremeh, has called on community leaders and parents to support the running of schools in their communities.

He said they could do that by visiting the schools regularly, and promptly report to the appropriate authorities about any challenges affecting the schools for action to be taken.

Mr Kyeremeh made the call when he led a team of officials from the ministry and the Ghana Education Service (GES), as well as officials from the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly to visit schools in the municipality as part of this year’s “My First Day at School.”

The Member of Parliament for Madina Abokobi, Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, also joined in the visit.

Schools visited

The team was met by the community leaders, including the chiefs of the communities and PTA executives, at all the schools visited. They visited the Otinibi Basic School, Ishabintu Khalifa KG/Primary School, the Danfa Methodist Basic School, the Kweiman Presby KG and the Ayi Mensah M/A Pre-school and Primary School.

The team interacted with the pupils, teachers and parents and later distributed learning materials, biscuits and fruit juices to the children.

The team was welcomed by the children with songs and dance in all the places they visited. It was all excitement and joy as the children received the items from the government officials and community leaders.

Mr Kyeremeh explained that the “My First Day at School,” was introduced to welcome and encourage children entering school for the first time to remain in school.

Shared responsibility

The Deputy Director-General of the GES, Mr Steve Adu, advised parents and community leaders to see themselves as integral parts in the running of schools in their communities.

He reminded them that they had a role to ensure that the newcomers remained in school, and charged the management of schools to make the day as memorable as possible for the children.

New structures

The Municipal Chief Executive of La Nkwantanang/Madina, Mr Franklin Anku, was happy that the assembly, in conjunction with the MP for the area, was adding more school blocks in some of the areas where the children were schooling under trees.

At the Otinibi Basic School, where the pre-school was run under a tree, the MCE led the minister and the MP to inspect a three-classroom block with offices and other facilities which were under construction.

He assured the minister that the six-month contract would be completed ahead of schedule so that the block could be used to accommodate the pupils.
