Students advised to exhibit academic integrity

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Education Winneba (UEW), Professor Akwasi Asabere- Ameyaw, has advised students to show academic integrity by doing their academic works all by themselves.

“You do not have to cheat in examinations and you are not expected to do someone else’s academic work on their behalf and you equally do not have to allow anyone to do your work on your behalf,” he said.

Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw was speaking at this year’s matriculation ceremony, which was held in two sessions, to admit 5,860 new students to the Winneba campus of the university, on Thursday.

The university received 27,241 applications for undergraduate regular programmes, but offered admissions to 10,292 for all its four campuses. It admitted 3,040 to the Kumasi campus, 791 to the Mampong campus and 601 to the Ajumako campus. A total of 506 postgraduate students were also offered admission.

Essence of university education

He said university education was to make students develop analytical minds and skills that would enable them to take full responsibility and control of their lives, for their own benefit and for the benefit of the society at large.

He said it was, therefore, essential that students made conscious efforts to take advantage of opportunities available to them to achieve their goals in future.

Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw said this year’s admissions represented a 100 per cent increase over that of the previous year and expressed optimism that the increase in admissions would enable the nation to train more teachers to address the problem of shortage of teachers in some schools.

Expansion of facilities

He said the commitment of the university to train more teachers required massive inflow of funds and a corresponding expansion of the university’s facilities.

“We need to make conscious efforts to replace antiquated equipment inherited from the then diploma–awarding institutions established well over half a century ago.  These facilities obviously cannot adequately help us train competent teachers that can comfortably face the challenges in the classroom in the 21st century,” he said.

He pointed out that the university needed modern equipment for the laboratories and workshops to attract and retain competent staff in its efforts to be a world class university for teacher education, and appealed to the government and all those committed to quality teaching in schools to support the university, which is ranked among the best in Africa.

The students took the matriculation oath pledging to abide by all regulations of the university.
