Stakeholders discuss standards of education in Tamale

The Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE),  Mr Abdul-Rahman Hanan Gundadow, has appealed to traditional authorities, parents and all other stakeholders to assist the assembly and the education directorate to check the falling standards of education in the metropolis.

He noted that for the past years, performance of pupils in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the metropolis had fallen below standards, hence the need for all stakeholders to come together to work hard to reverse the trend.

Mr Gundadow made the appeal at an educational review meeting in Tamale on Wednesday to discuss the poor performance of basic schools in the metropolis.

He stated that there was no doubt that education had become an important tool for the development of nations throughout the world, adding that education held the key to the eradication of ignorance, disease and squalor which confronted many people in the metropolis.

Mr Gundadow said the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, in consultation with the Metropolitan Education Oversight Committee, had over the years pursued measures to address the challenges confronting the education sector but those measures had not yielded the desired results.

The Tamale Metropolitan Director of Education, Alhaji Saani Mahama, said the metropolis was one of the few areas in the country that could boast graduate teachers  at the basic level of education who had the requisite knowledge and skills, and  blamed the poor BECE results on poor supervision and other negative attitudes towards work by some circuit supervisors and teachers.

He, therefore, called for a concerted effort from all stakeholders in the metropolis to ensure that the desired results were attained.

In a presentation, a facilitator from Ibis, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) which has interest in education, Mr Eric Kavaarpuo, expressed concern about pupil/student-teacher contact hours in the metropolis, saying it had been one of the major factors for the abysmal academic performance.
