The college, which was inaugurated last year, is to train well-qualified teachers for Ghana’s disadvantaged rural schools and also to provide the best teacher education in practice. It is also to promote better academic outcomes and progression of students of rural schools in Ghana.

A total of 186 students, made up of 70 females and 116 males, were officially admitted to the college to pursue a three-year Diploma in Basic Education at the matriculation ceremony held at the forecourt of the college’s administration block at Yendi last Saturday.

The college, a government-assisted institution and now affiliated to the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in the Central Region, was established by the Catholic Diocese of Yendi under the leadership of the Most Rev. Vincent Sowah Boi-Nai, the Catholic Bishop of Yendi, to train teachers to serve in rural and deprived communities along the Eastern Corridor stretch in the Northern Region.

Training of teachers

At the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the UEW, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, said the UEW would continue to guide and mentor the college to produce highly qualified and well-motivated teachers with strong character and integrity to be an inspiration and role models for learners in rural and deprived communities in Ghana.

He, therefore, urged the students to be disciplined and study hard to bring into fruition the purpose for establishing the college.

Prof. Avoke, while congratulating the students on gaining admission to the college, also urged them to abide by the rules and regulations of the school no matter their religious, cultural, social and ethnic backgrounds.

The governing Council Chairman of the college, the Most Rev. Boi-Nai, said the Catholic Church believed evangelism went hand in hand with human development, hence the decision by the diocese to establish the college at Yendi to help train teachers to provide quality education at Yendi and its surrounding communities in the Eastern Corridor enclave of the region.

He reiterated the call on the students to take their studies seriously as pioneers to bring fame and honour to the college and gave an assurance that the college would comply with all the directives of the UEW, which is the mentoring institution of the college.

Appeal

He appealed through the Ministry of Education for more educational facilities for the school to enhance teaching and learning.

The Principal of the college, Dr Erasmus Norviewu-Mortty, paid a glowing tribute to all who assisted in the establishment of the college and expressed his gratitude to individuals who continued to support in the running of the school.

He urged the students to be committed to the call of the institution and also abide by the rules and regulations of the school, adding that their attitude must inspire others to come to the school.
