The Headmistress of St Rose’s Senior High School, Mrs Margaret Bangfu, has appealed to the  government to help expand its infrastructural facilities to ease congestion in the school’s dormitories and classrooms.

She said due to the increasing number of students in the school, there had been overcrowding in the dormitories which was a threat to the health of the students.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mrs Bangfu noted that these challenges were hampering effective teaching and learning, and called for support for the school.

She made the call at the end of a health walk organised by members of the St Rose’s Senior High School Old Students Association in Accra last Saturday.

The exercise formed part of activities to mark the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

The school located at Akwatia in the Eastern Region,  launched its 50th Anniversary celebrations in Accra, in April last year on the theme “Rose’s at 50 — The impact of Catholic Education for girls: the way forward”.

St Rose’s is ranked among the Grade A schools in Ghana based on its excellent academic record and has produced remarkable results in the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the former General Certificate of Education (GCE) ‘O and A level’ examinations over the years.

Challenges

According to Mrs Bangfu, although the school had chalked up many successes in the past 50 years, there were some challenges facing the institution.

“Some of the challenges are inadequate infrastructural facilities, lack of equipment in the science laboratories and poor security, which is also a major problem of the school.

“However, the school is still raising funds with the help of the Parent Teachers Association to construct a fence wall,” she said.

Achievement

According to Mrs Bangfu, the school had recorded good grades in the past years, adding that the school was part of the 15 excellent schools that were ranked by the West African Examination Council last year.

Educate children

The Attorney- General and Minister of Justice, Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, who is also an old student of the school, called on parents to take  active interest in the education of their children, to enable them to grow to become useful citizens.

Education, she said, was vital to national development, adding that for children to achieve excellence in education, there was the need for parents to support their wards.

Mrs Appiah-Oppong commended authorities of the school for achieving academic excellence over the years, and expressed the hope that the school would continue to offer the best tuition and moral education for the development of the nation.

The celebration

The walk, which formed part of activities to mark the 50th Anniversary celebration of the school, started from the Holy Spirit Cathedral, through some principal streets in the capital and ended at the Independence Square. The climax for the celebration is February 7, 2015 on the school’s premises at Akwatia.

The occasion is expected to be graced by prominent personalities such as the Attorney-General, who will be the guest speaker, the Okyenhene and the Minister of Education.

The President of the St Rose’s Old Students Association (ROSA), Mrs Grace Brew, added that the association had provided the school with a 78-seater capacity computer laboratory and had refurbished the Old Pavilion, and constructed a two-bedroom staff bungalow as part of efforts to develop the school.
