St Louis College holds 10th graduation

The St Louis College of Education has held its 10th graduation ceremony for 280 graduands who have completed a three-year Diploma programme at the College, in Kumasi.

The theme for the ceremony was “Promoting Teacher Professionalism-The Role of Female Teachers”. 

 In an address delivered on her behalf by an Assistant Director of Education, Mr Cephas Adjei Mensah, the Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, said the government, through the Ministry of Education, was committed to improving the general conditions of the colleges of education to equip teachers to perform effectively.  

She said the construction and rehabilitation of infrastructural facilities in the various colleges of education would continue in the pursuit of these objectives, adding that the Ghana Partnership for Education Grant would be used to train at least 5,000 teachers in line with efforts to attain the target of providing schools at various levels with 95 per cent  trained teachers by 2015. 

According to the minister, the government, together with its donor partners, will support 57 deprived districts and basic schools in planning, monitoring and delivery of quality education at the basic level in deprived districts, adding that the ministry would also intensify in-service education and training (INSET) for teachers.        

Prof. Agyemang pointed out that the decision by the government to upgrade teacher training colleges to  tertiary institutions was to produce best qualified teachers. 

The Principal of the College, Dame (Mrs) Comfort Boakye Mensah, in her welcome address, said the biggest challenges confronting the college were inadequate lecture halls and furniture and lack of vehicles for the smooth operation of the school.
