The minister said education was a right, hence the need to assist persons with disabilities to enjoy their full constitutional rights with regard to education.

At a ceremony during which Sonitra Limited made a presentation to the Akropong School for the Blind last Saturday at Akropong, Mr Danaa commended all who had worked tirelessly to support the students of the school.

According to him, the attempt to fight disability was not rosy, and urged the students to be courageous and hardworking.

Presentation ceremony

Sonitra Limited, an international construction and civil engineering firm based in Ghana, celebrated its Good Deeds Day with the Akropong School for the Blind. It is an annual donation ceremony to demonstrate its corporate social responsibility.

The company donated 80 chairs and tables to enhance effective education of the students and handed over a playground at a total cost of GH¢30,000 for students in lower primary.

Presenting the items to the school, a representative of Sonitra Limited, Mrs Tamar Sasporta, explained that the Good Deeds Day was a ceremony that the company undertook to support the needy in society.

According to her, it was more of a duty than a mere ceremony to lend support to students who were visually impaired.

Mrs Sasporta said while it was just a token, they believed it would cushion the school and its student population in terms of offering quality education, adding that, “The world becomes a better place when you give to others.”

She commended the authorities for their time and love in managing and caring for the students.

Performance by students

The students sang melodious songs to welcome the guests and benefactors.

The school’s brass band, choir and cultural troupe performed beautifully to the amazement of individuals present which indeed demonstrated their slogan, “Disability is not inability.”

Appreciation

The Assistant Headmaster of the school, Mr Joseph Atsu Homadzi, commended the government and corporate institutions for supporting the school.

He said corporate institutions had been very helpful to the students through their various support and also appreciated the government for providing subvention for the students.

Mr Homadzi, however, appealed for more educational materials to enhance the education of the students.

“We cannot express our gratitude enough but we appeal to all – individuals, groups and businesses – to come to our aid since we are needy people,” he said.
