The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Madam Sun Baohong, has inaugurated a 60-seater Information and Communications Technology (ICT) centre for the Nyanpkala Junior High School (JHS) in Nyankpala in the Tolon District in the Northern Region to enhance teaching and learning of ICT in the school.

The centre has been connected to the Internet and equipped with computers and accessories. It was built in line with efforts to help bridge the digital gap between schools in urban and rural areas.

The facility, which also has a projector for ICT lessons, is a collaboration between the Chinese Embassy in Accra and the Ghana-China Friendship Association (GHACHIFA).

Courtesy call

On her arrival in Tamale, the Chinese Ambassador paid a courtesy call on the Northern Regional Minister, Mr Abbadalla Abubakari, at his office where they both pledged their commitment to deepen the existing relationship between the two countries and strive for development in the region.

Madam Baohong further paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Nyankpala, Yoo-Naa Yakubu Abdulai, at his palace and presented him with a gift before inaugurating the ICT centre.

Inauguration

At the inaugural ceremony at Nyankpala last Friday, Madam Baohong said the Chinese Government and GHACHIFA worked together to help the schoolchildren broaden their knowledge in ICT so that they may also contribute to the development of the country in future.

She said China had advanced in the use and application of ICT for development, and it was necessary for Ghana to also equip its young people with skills and knowledge in ICT to quicken its pace of development.

China-Ghana relations

Ambassador Baohong pledged her country’s commitment and support for the Ghana Government in its development efforts.

She said at a recent China-Ghana Economic and Trade Cooperation forum held in Accra, the Chinese Government decided to partner the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) to help build Buipe into a logistics transit base.

Buipe, the capital of the Central Gonja District, is the gateway to the Northern Region and landlocked countries, including Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, that take their goods through the corridor using the Volta Lake and its transport system.

Appreciation

The Northern Regional Minister, Mr Abdallah Abubakari, thanked the Chinese Embassy and GHACHIFA and urged the school authorities and the community to maintain the facility in order to extend its lifespan for future generations.

The District Chief Executive for Tolon, Mr Abukari Seidu, pledged the support of the assembly towards the maintenance of the centre and also expressed gratitude to the donors. He also expressed optimism that the facility would go a long way to enhance the children’s knowledge in ICT.

The President of GHACHIFA, Ambassador Gottfred Amoo, said the provision of the centre and others like that in schools in rural areas would deepen the existing friendship between the people of the two countries.

He said the Chinese Embassy and the association had provided similar facilities for some schools in the Upper East Region and other parts of the country.
