Over the years, the school has produced remarkable results in the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and in the past, the General Certificate of Education (GCE) ‘O and A level’ examinations.

Products from the school can be found in different fields such as actuarial science, law, education, medicine, technology and religion.

Over the past 49 years, the school has produced great people in society such as Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Ms Esther Owusu, a retired educationist, Ms Eunice Ogbugo, CEO of Eugo Terrano Limited, Ms Rebecca Kwei, a journalist of the Graphic Communications Group Limited and Ms Doreen Andoh, a journalist of the Multimedia Group.

In April this year, the school launched its 50th anniversary celebrations in Accra. The theme for the celebration is, “Rose's at 50 — The impact of Catholic Education For Girls: the way forward”.

Annual thanksgiving service

Speaking at an annual thanksgiving service in commemoration of the Feast of St Rose’s of Lima last Sunday in Accra, a Catholic Priest at the Christ the King Parish, Rev. Father Andrew Campbell, admonished women to take good care of themselves and not to stoop low for men in their pursuit of jobs.

The Feast of St Rose’s is marked on the 23rd of August every year to remember St Rose’s of Lima the Founder of St Rose’s Senior High School.

The occasion also brought together old students of the school across the country to thank God and map out strategies for the 50th anniversary celebration of the school slated for February 7, 2015.

They also took stock of the year under review and discussed the line-up of activities for the anniversary.

Good habits

Speaking on the theme, “Good Habits,” Rev. Father Campbell said there was the need for a woman to develop a good habit in whatever she did.

Dwelling his teachings on Romans 12:1-2, he said there was the need for one to keep one’s body clean, adding that “You must use your body for the glory of God and as a living sacrifice.”

Rev. Father Campbell added that “as a woman, your body is not a thank you card to be used to replace an appreciation for an offer given you.”

He added that the man with a clean heart and mind would climb the mountain of God.

He also charged them to develop habits such as punctuality, discipline, honesty and faithfulness.

ROSA President

Briefing the Daily Graphic at the end of the programme, the President of the St Rose’s Old Students Association (ROSA), Mrs Grace Brew, said the association had put measures in place to make the anniversary a success.

As part of the preparations, she said the association had put up a two-bedroom bungalow for the staff of the school, and called on all old students to contribute their quota towards the development of the school.

Mrs Brew expressed her excitement about the fact that St Rose’s continued to be ranked among the best schools in the country.

She said out of the 250 students who sat for the 2014 WASSCE, 10 had 8As, with eight of them scoring 6As and the rest scoring Bs throughout, representing a 100 per cent score.

“In the 2013 WASSCE, out of a total of 656 candidates presented, 536 students had eight passes, 114 had seven passes and four had six passes.

The old students lauded the efforts of the late Bishop Oliver Bowers, the Dominican Sisters from Speyer, Germany, notably Sisters Beatrice and Solamen (both former headmistresses), the Catholic Church and Father P. Lo Bianco and all the successive Bishops of the Accra and Koforidua Dioceses.

They also mentioned the chiefs, particularly  Barima Kofi Bempong II and his successors, elders and people of Akwatia, the various governments, the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, past headmistresses, the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Rose's Old Students Association (ROSA), past and present teaching and non-teaching staff members, students and all well-wishers, for their respective roles.
