Savelugu-Nanton builds school to boost girl-child education

The Savelugu-Nanton Municipal Assembly in the Northern Region has inaugurated a GH¢177,000 three-unit classroom block at Savelugu, the municipal capital to encourage the girl-child in the municipality to complete junior high school (JHS).

It is also to make basic education accessible to pupils from hard-to-reach areas.

The building, which has other ancillary facilities, such as office, store, furniture, urinal and toilet facilities, is under a project dubbed: “Girls Model School”, aimed at encouraging girl-child education in the municipality.

Girl-child education

At a short ceremony to hand over the facility to the municipal education directorate, the Savelugu Coordinating Director, Mr Issaka Briamah Basintale, said the assembly was committed to improving and promoting girl-child education in the area.

He said it was worrying that in spite of the benefits of education, many parents in the area still did not see the importance of enrolling the girl-child in school.

He said it was only through education that girls could be empowered economically, socially, politically and culturally in their communities to reduce poverty.

Mr Basintale further said the assembly had acquired an eight-hectare land to construct hostel facilities for the girls who would be enrolled in the Girls Model School.

He added that part of the land would be used to construct Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Science laboratories in order to promote the teaching and learning of Science and ICT.

The concept

The Programme Facilitator of IBIS, an NGO, Mr Wumbei Dokurugu, said the Girls Model school concept could be adopted by other assemblies in the region and the country as a whole to improve girl-child education.

He said many a time, students from hard-to-reach areas abandoned their JHS education due to the distance they trekked to access education in other communities.

He explained that the Girls Model school system was first piloted by IBIS in Sawla in 2008, adding that the project achieved significant results as most of the students who were used in the school obtained high grades in their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The Savelugu Municipal Education Director, Mr Philip Issahaku Ziblim, said the school would be properly monitored by the education directorate to ensure that it achieved its purpose.

He gave an assurance that only dedicated teachers would be sent to the school, and added that the “school will not over-enrol students.”
