RMU partners foreign organisations

The Regional Maritime University (RMU) has entered into partnerships with a number of foreign organisations for the training and employment of graduates from the university.

The organisations, which include Bernhard Schulte Shipping Management (BSM), Swire Pacific, an offshore marine industry, Technip and Seaweld Engineering Limited, all operate in the marine oil and gas industry.

At the university’s matriculation ceremony in Accra, the Vice Chancellor(VC) of RMU, Professor Elvis Nyarko, explained that the move was to create the platform for graduates from the university to learn the practical aspects of what they were taught.

“The partnerships with these organisations form part of RMU’s determined commitment to combine theory with practice and also allow our graduates to get jobs”, he said.

In all, 617 students from both member and non-member countries gained admission to the university this academic year. They comprise 339 males and 46 females.

Prof. Nyarko said over the past years, RMU had made numerous efforts to ensure that the training offered to students was geared towards making them employable.

For instance, he said, the university’s partnership with BSM has facilitated the offer of on-board training to the staff of RMU by Bernhard Schulte vessels plying the West Coast of Africa. The essence is to make them abreast of the industry practice.

“Already, more than 120 RMU graduates are being trained on Bernhard Schulte (BS) vessels in the highest standards in the maritime industry”, Prof. Nyarko added.

Access to university education

In its desire to provide access to university education to many qualified applicants, Prof. Nyarko said RMU had introduced another stream of admission which would commence in January every year, starting from 2017.

He said the decision was taken following management’s realisation that most candidates could not enter the university because their results were released in August after the university’s admission had closed.

The VC said the university would continue to come up with programmes that would prepare the youth for the job market.

He cautioned the students against indulging in activities that could endanger their education and reminded them that, “Breaking the school’s regulations has consequence.”
