‘Review teachings that discourage educational pursuit’

A Minister of State at the Presidency, Alhaji Rashid Pelpuo, has called for a change in Islamic teachings that dissuade Muslims in the country from pursuing Western education.

According to him, the teachings do not encourage Muslims to aspire to higher levels in society, making them dependent on menial jobs for survival.

Alhaji Pelpuo, who was speaking at the launch of a book titled “Islamic revivalism in contemporary Ghana,” said there was the need for Muslims to reflect on some of their teachings and help create a better society for the future.

The Book

The book, written by a lecturer of the Islamic University College of Ghana, Dr Yunue Dumbe, tells the history of the Islamic religion in Ghana, its influence and factors that have contributed to shaping its identity in the past five decades.

Topics in the book include Ghana’s foreign policy and its impact on Islamic revivalism, Sufi revivalism, Salifi revivalism, Shi’ism and the search for religious space and the third universal theory.

The ceremony was attended by ministers of state, Members of Parliament, the academia, as well as leaders and members of Muslim communities in the country.

Launching the book, Alhaji Pelpuo urged Muslims, especially the youth, to educate themselves to be able to contribute to the development of society.

In a brief remark, Dr Dumbe said the book would be useful for all Muslims, the academia and policy makers who would want to know about Islam.

He thanked all who in various ways contributed towards the success of the book.

Other Speakers

The Guest Speaker for the occasion, Sheik Osman Bari, said the lack of commitment of the Muslim population in the country towards the well-being of their fellow Muslims was the major challenge facing the religion.

Sheik Osman Bari stated that Muslims had the responsibility to promote the cause of Islam and called on all Muslims to work towards achieving that objective.

The book, he explained, was a transcending piece from the traditional understanding of Islam to a more dynamic and intellectual approach. He added that it was a moral booster for Muslims in the country.

The first copy was auctioned for GH¢5000.
