‘Review funding models for tertiary education’

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Professor John Owusu Gyapong, has called for a review of funding models for tertiary education, with emphasis on the teaching of science and technology, in support of national development.

He observed that it was unfortunate that 60 years after the country’s independence, the nation had not walked the talk although it had touted the importance of science and technology on several platforms.

Addressing the launch of the ninth biennial congress of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) alumni association in Ho, Prof. Gyapong reminded the alumni of the various universities of their roles as potential allies in funding university programmes in the face of expansion but with dwindling resources.

Theme
The congress, which is slated for April 28 in Ho, is on the theme, “Re-Engineering Funding of Tertiary Education in Ghana- The role of the Alumni”.

He urged them to sell the university and invest in its operations to complement efforts of other stakeholders and to buttress their significant roles in the activities of their alma mater.

Prof. Gyapong advised old students to maintain contact with their alma mater with a sense of belongingness to an institution which helped to develop and shape their careers, adding that old students should not be individualistic, but cultivate the spirit of benevolence and give back to society.

Practical solutions
Prof. Gyapong asked the government to partner tertiary institutions, Vice Chancellors’ Forum and other stakeholders to think through the problems facing funding of tertiary institutions to come up with practical solutions.

The global President of the alumni, Madam Eunice Amoako, said the alumni had a stake in the funding of tertiary institutions in order to facilitate research and learning, adding that integrity on campus should be maintained for the institutions to live up to expectations and address challenges.

In a welcome address, the President of the Volta Chapter of the alumni, Mr William Baah, urged all alumni members to attend the biennial congress in large numbers in order to achieve the dream outlined under the theme for the congress.
