Regent University lauded for promoting science education
The Minister of Education, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has commended the management of the Regent University College of Science and Technology (RUCST) for focusing its teaching and learning process on science and technology.

According to her, many tertiary institutions in Ghana shied away from science and technology, making it difficult for the country to compete globally.
“We are pleased at the efforts of this great institution to focus on an area of education that is relevant today and will be for the future. This, I dare say, will make your students highly marketable and certainly the preferred choice on the job market,” she added.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said this in a speech read on her behalf at the eighth matriculation and the sixth congregation of the RUCST in Accra last Saturday.
At the ceremony, 510 students who pursued undergraduate and postgraduate courses were presented with certificates.
The college also admitted 593 students to pursue various courses for the 2012/2013 academic year.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged the management of the RUCST to expand its focus on science and technology education to produce the human resource required by the nation for national development.
She explained that the country was confronted by the global threat of electronic fraud and computer hacking and so serious concern must be given to the challenge in order to check perpetrators.
“It is in this regard that I wish to recommend to the academic board of the college the need to incorporate ethical standards in its curriculum, especially for students of computer science and technology,” she said.
She urged the institution to intensify its collaboration with both public and private institutions to promote the study of science and technology.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang called on the graduates to make good use of the investment made in them and help impart the knowledge they had acquired to the younger generation, adding, “Count yourselves among the privileged few to have had this level of education.”
She indicated that there was a growing need to expand higher education to meet the increasing demand.
The National Accreditation Board, she said, would be strengthened to ensure that it did not allow the proliferation of degree mills and bogus universities to undermine the quality and credibility of universities and tertiary level education.
The President and Founder of the RUCST, Rev Prof Emmanuel Kingsley Kwabena Larbi, said the vision of the college was to become a fully chartered world-class university within the shortest possible time.
He enumerated some of the projects carried out by the college as the renovation of a computer laboratory at the Larteh Presbyterian Senior High/Technical School and the construction of a modern washroom for the Kyenku Larbi Junior High School in the Eastern Region.
Rev Prof Larbi stated that the country needed selfless, dedicated, visionary and result-driven leaders to help improve the economy and develop the nation.
“Our leaders seem to have created the impression that we can balance our national budget or meet certain national priorities only when we receive grants and donations from so-called donor partners,” he said, adding, “We must brighten the corner where we are.”
