Reading clinic for lower primary teachers

National Partnership for Children’s Trust (NPCT), a not-for-profit child-focused charitable organisation, has organised a three-day reading clinic at the Nima Cluster of Basic Schools, for lower primary teachers.

The clinic, organised in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), with support from HFC Bank, was to help improve the skills of the teachers in view of declining standards of education, low pass rates in the BECE examinations and inability of students to read and write after completing junior high school (JHS).

According to Dr Agnes Akosua Aidoo, the NPCT trustee in-charge of reading clinics, the clinic was designed to equip teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge for teaching the English Language reading effectively.

Dr Aidoo noted that education was the key to the development of individuals and the nation at large, hence the need to have it improved at the foundational level.

Mrs Judith Sawyerr, the vice chairperson of the board of Trustees of NPCT, expressed appreciation to HFC Bank for sponsoring the workshop and gave the assurance that the trust would continue to seek funds with which to embark on projects such as sanitation, provision of potable water, washrooms and libraries.

The participants are expected to use the methodology learnt and to share the knowledge with their colleagues at their respective schools.

Twenty-seven kindergarten and primary One and Two teachers from Adentan, La Dadekotopon, Ayawaso West, Okaikoi North and Ga West Metros were trained by seasoned resource persons from the GES led by Madam Juliana Akrong, the Deputy Director in charge of management and supervision at the GES Accra Metropolis office.

NPCT aims at making a difference in the lives of Ghanaian children by influencing policies and supporting programmes to ensure that all children enjoy their inalienable rights, particularly their rights to health and education.
