Pupils advised not to attend funerals to the detriment of education

The Awoamefia of the Anlo Traditional Area, Togbui Sri III, has expressed worry over the way some pupils in the area have taken keen interest in funerals and other social activities to the detriment of their education.

He said the standard of education in the southern part of the Volta Region was waning because children no longer paid attention to their books.

Addressing a ceremony to inaugurate a six-unit classroom block for the Agbatsivi L.A Primary School in the Keta Municipality over the weekend, the paramount chief attributed the bad behaviour of the schoolchildren to the neglect of their parents.

He reminded parents of their duty to ensure that their children studied at home and also advised the children against attending functions that were meant for adults.

The block was donated to the community by the Anlo Education Trust fund with support from the Local Government Service Secretariat. The school building worth GH¢390,000, consists of a library, office, store and a four-seater KVIP.

The project was undertaken to bring relief to the primary school pupils, who shared a dilapidated three-unit block with some studying under trees.

Boosting education

Togbui Sri pointed out that the efforts to provide the needed infrastructure to boost education in the area would be meaningless if the children did not study hard to make a mark.

Good academic performance, he observed, had been the hallmark of the Anlos and, therefore, he reminded them to maintain the standard at all times to enhance the development of the people.

He advised the pupils to take their education seriously because it was the best investment their parents and the community could offer them in life.

He further tasked parents to collaborate with teachers and other stakeholders to ensure that investment in their children’s education was geared towards the development of the area and the country in general.

Assembly’s contribution

The Keta Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Sylvester Edah Tornyeavah, stated that the assembly had plans to allocate over 70 per cent of the annual budget to the provision of educational infrastructure in the basic schools for which Agbatsivi was a beneficiary.

He said aside from education, the assembly was also doing its best in terms of electricity, health and agriculture for the people, as a lot of completed projects would soon be inaugurated to serve their needs.

“These include a shopping mall at Anloga, 10-unit lecture hall for  the Nurses Training College at Keta, a kindergarten block, basic school for Keta Senior High School, CHPS compound at Woe Dziedzoeve and a refurbished municipal education complex,” he said.

In a speech read on his behalf, the Headmaster, Mr Horsetor Kudjoe Kukekpo, indicated that the school, which started with 20 pupils in 1996, currently boasts a population of 186.

He appealed to the government to introduce the School Feeding Programme in the school to encourage children to stay in school and concentrate on academic activities.
