The Brong Ahafo Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr Lord Mike Tagoe, has stressed the need for intensified public education on waste management.

According to him, continuous sensitisation and awareness creation of proper waste management practices was a positive way to ensure sustainability and adherence to environmental sanitation laws.

Mr Tagoe stated these in an interview with the Daily Graphic during the 10th National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The exercise, which is observed on the first Saturday of every month under the auspices of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), saw the participation of volunteer groups, including some workers of the Zoomlion Company in the regional capital. The national sanitation day is also aimed at pushing an agenda for proper sanitation among citizens.

Ahead of the exercise, the MLGRD presented 10,000 waste bins, 200 long brooms, 150 wheel barrows, 200 each rakes, and Wellington boots, 50 machetes, 100 shovels and 1,000 gloves to the Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council to be distributed to the districts for the exercise.

Continuous support

On sustaining the exercise in the region, Mr Tagoe said the company would continue to do its best to ensure a clean environment but encouraged residents to properly dispose of their waste.

For his part, the Communications Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr Robert Coleman, said although the regional tour of the national exercise had ended, plans were far advanced to further collaborate with the MLGRD to support the regions and districts to sustain the exercise.

He said the company intended to deploy more sanitation equipment to help in the successful implementation of the exercise, and added that there was also the need for the government to implement the sanitation bye laws.

“Zoomlion Ghana Limited has since the inception of the national exercise supported with logistics, personnel, and technical expertise and we will continue to do so,” he said.
