Private universities need support from other avenues — Prof Avoke

The vice-chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Prof. Mawutor Avoke, has appealed to the government to consider opening up other resource avenues by which private universities can be supported by organisations and donor partners who give similar support to state-owned universities.

“We plead with the government to, as a matter of urgency, institute measures which will help to resource private universities which make meaningful contributions to the development of the country’s human resource.

“We are calling for support which could be in the form of an established subvention solely for private institutions, infrastructure support and equipment,” Prof. Avoke said at the fifth congregation of the University College of Management Studies (UCOMS), at New Aplaku near Accra.

Graduates

A total of 342 students who pursued various programmes graduated. Out of the number, 55 had first class; 169, second class upper division; 115, second class lower division and three, third class.

Prof. Avoke noted that private universities needed help to operate so as to enhance national development. He also called on the alumni of UCOMS to assist the university.

“Private universities have come to stay and they will continue helping in national development so we all need to help them survive so that they can contribute their best. It should be noted that the government cannot do it alone,” he said.

Postgraduate programmes

The acting Vice Rector of UCOMS, Mr James Creppy, said the university, formerly Institute of Management Studies (IMS), started in 1974 as a tutorial college that organised professional programmes for the award of certificates in the study of Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS),

Master’s programmes

He said plans were far-advanced by the university for the implementation and running of Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) Logistics and Supply Chain Management, MBA Forensic Accounting and Auditing, MBA Accounting and Financial Economics and MBA Human Resource Management.

“In collaboration with the SMC University, Switzerland, UCOMS will soon be offering online courses in the following programmes: MBA Strategic Procurement, MBA Information and Security Management, MBA Entrepreneurship and Master of International Business (MIB),” he said.
