Prempeh College authorities asked to raise dormitory railings

Following the unfortunate death of a final year student of the Prempeh College in Kumasi, who fell from the second floor of his Opoku Ware Dormitory, educational authorities of the Kumasi Metropolis have directed that the low iron balustrade be raised to forestall future occurrences.

Briefing the Daily Graphic after a visit to the school, the Metro Director of Education, Mr Alexander Attah Asante said, “We have directed the headmaster to look for the consultant who supervised the construction of the structure and ensure that it was raised”.

He said the decision was taken after it was realised that the three line balustrade “was not high enough”.

He added that the authorities of the school have been directed again to furnish the metro office of education with a detailed report on the incident for onward report to the Director General of Education.

Incident
Last Friday, two final year students of the Prempeh College who engaged in usual students’ pranks inadvertently fell from the second floor of the newly constructed Opoku Ware II dormitory.

Master Samuel Asare Bediako died instantly while his other colleague, Tabiri Kofi Boateng sustained life-threating injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The situation had brought fear and uneasy calm to both teaching and non-teaching staff as well as students on campus, especially those on the first and the second floors of the Opoku Ware House.

Authorities have engaged the students in the dormitory and admonished them to be careful about the balustrade and ensure that they refrain from leaning on it.
