The minister indicated that the policy had seen its birth as a result of extensive stakeholder consultations and great efforts by the working group for consideration and validation.

The objectives of the PTPDM policy are to provide the framework for developing standards, core values and ethics for the teaching profession in order to foster the development of a world-class teacher capable of contributing significantly to students learning and achievement.

The policy is to develop teachers’ ability to adopt reflective teaching approaches to enhance the quality of lesson delivery in kindergarten, primary, junior high schools, senior high schools, and technical and vocational institutions.

In addition, it would specify principles for teacher management in order to motivate excellence teacher performance and commitment to lifelong learning, provide areas of setting regulatory standards to govern teachers’ work and living conditions in order to make teaching an attractive and rewarding career as well as foster the notion of teaching as a lifelong career which is linked to an evidence-based system of career advancement and promotion.

The policy is to also promote awareness of the importance of teacher welfare and working conditions to raise the value and social status of pre-tertiary teachers in Ghana.

A statement signed by Mr Paul Krampah, Head of Public Relations at the Ministry of Education said Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was full of praise and commendation for the working group and expressed her gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to this laudable achievement.

Dignitaries and some members at the launch also expressed their satisfaction at the finalisation of the policy and hoped that the policy would be implemented fully to facilitate improvement in the situation of the teacher and thereby positively affect the quality of teaching and learning in the pre-tertiary sub-sector.
