He said since children were future leaders, it was parents’ responsibility to ensure their well-being by taking actions that would impact positively on their growth and development.

Mr Addison gave the advice at the 26th graduation of the Aglow Early Childhood Development Centre in Accra on Saturday.  The ceremony had the theme: “The rights of the child - key to national development.”

Mr Addison also said parents must build a good foundation for their children, and stressed, “The foundation of our children lies in the provision of quality basic education, and every effort must be made to support our basic educational institutions so that they can discharge their obligations effectively”.

He said the current economic and social challenges confronting some families posed threats to the foundation of the home, adding that “unemployment rates and high cost of living are affecting the stability of our homes and children have become the victims.”

“Let us not lose hope, dear parents and guardians. Let us muster courage and persevere even in the midst of these challenges because inside these children we see the leaders of tomorrow but anytime we give up on our children, it will be the beginning of the end of their dreams and their future,” he said.

The Headmistress of the school, Mrs Esther Apedo, said children had the right to education, shelter and good health and they needed to enjoy those rights to ensure their development.

“Here in Aglow, our aim is to train these children for the future, laying positive emphasis on their moral, mental and physical development,” she said.

Mrs Apedo also stated that Aglow was 26 years old and added that 31 pupils were graduating.

On the development of the school over the period, she said there had been major infrastructural development in the school, while computer lessons for K.G.1 and K.G.2 had been introduced.

She commended the school authorities for transforming the school’s playground into a modern sophisticated and colourful one with facilities such as an eight-seater swing and an eight-seater merry-go-round, which were inaugurated during the ceremony.
