Parents urged to complement government's efforts

Parents and guardians have been urged to complement the government’s efforts in the provision of textbooks for their children and wards to facilitate effective teaching and learning.

Messrs Africanus Beribe, Circuit Supervisor for Asuogya, and Kofi Abrefa Adade, a Guidance Counselor, explained that more often than not, textbooks, as a key teaching aid, and other learning materials were not forthcoming from the government.

They said it was, therefore, incumbent on parents, in particular, to consider it as their responsibility to provide such important school items for their children, thereby contributing meaningfully to their education.

Political promises

“Do not rely on the politician who says education is free, and so you will hesitate to buy textbooks and other things needed badly for your children’s education. If you continue to do that, then you are not helping them, and will pay dearly for the future of your children, which is their education,’’ Mr Bebire admonished.

The two officials, who were contributing at a stakeholders of education meeting at Wenchi, noted that some parents and guardians were prepared to invest in their children who were attending private basic schools, but others were very reluctant to do so when it came to spending same for their wards enrolled in public schools.

Participants

The meeting, attended by parents, teachers, circuit supervisors, chiefs and assembly members, among others, was organised by the Gender Studies and Documentation Centre (Gender Centre), a non-governmental organisation operating in the Brong Ahafo Region, under a project titled; ‘‘Promoting Quality Education Delivery and Safe School Environment in Wenchi and Tain District (2012-2015),’’ which the NGO is undertaking in the two areas.

The project is being sponsored by UKAID, USAID and the EU, in collaboration with STAR-Ghana.

Ms Evelyn Nuvor and Mrs Esther Darko-Mensah, the Programmes Manager and the Project Officer respectively of Gender Centre, said much as the NGO was prepared to assist the communities to solve their educational challenges, it was important for the community members to also contribute their quota in terms of communal labour to help their children.
