Parents advised to supervise children

The Principal of the Mount Mary College of Education, Somanya, Mr Peter Attafuah, has advised parents to  complement the efforts of school authorities, by supervising their children at home.

He said in addition to providing their children with their financial needs in school they should give them the needed support and endeavour to supervise their home work, and encourage them to take their academic work seriously.
He gave the advice at the fourth graduation ceremony of Carol Gray International School at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality.

Current population
The school, with a current population of 365 pupils at the kindergarten, primary and junior high levels, was established on the basis of the Mmofra Trom Education Initiative in June 2001 with 30 disadvantaged children drawn from the Yilo and Manya Krobo Municipalities.
The primary objective is to provide the disadvantaged children; especially the orphans, with an environment that is close to their homes and families and at the same time give them access to quality education, health care and training skills to make them self-reliant in the future.
In all, 20 kindergarten pupils were promoted to primary one, while 27 junior high school students, who had completed their basic education, graduated from the school.
Mr Attafuah said handling children was a difficult task and, therefore, pleaded with the teachers to do their best to meet the needs of the pupils.
“As professional teachers, I am aware that you know what to do, however, I am pleading with you to exercise restrain in handling the children as care-givers and exhibit  integrity as they always live by example,” the principal emphasised.

Assessing teaching methods
He said to assist children, teachers should continually vary their teaching methods to ensure that they provided the children with the best instruction .
The Director of the school, Mr Olan Adjetey, said the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results of the school continued to improve from year to year.
He said this year, the school scored 100 per cent passes with many of the 27 candidates presented scoring grade one in most of the subjects. That, he attributed to the hard work of the staff members and urged them to do more.
He said about 12 per cent of the school’s population, drawn from Yilo and Manya communities, enjoyed either full or half scholarship.

Medical centre for the school
He also stated that work on a medical centre for the school was about 80 per cent complete and appealed to philanthropic individuals and organisations to partner the school to complete the project and make it operational by the first quarter of next year.
The Private Schools Coordinator for the Ghana Education Service (GES), Yilo Krobo, Miss Faustina Akplu, lauded the school for its high academic achievement in the municipality.
Mr Kenneth Krampah of the Ghana Water Company, who chaired the function, also stressed the need for parents to give the needed support to their children.
The pupils entertained the guests with poetry recitals and drama.
