He said the requirement had become necessary in the fight against preventable diseases such as cholera.

Mr Abdulai expressed the need at the first matriculation ceremony for the Oxford Community College of Healthcare, a private health institution to which 19 female students were formally admitted.

He said the Municipal Health Directorate welcomed the establishment of the college since it would produce health personnel who would be expected to support demand for healthcare services.

Mr Abdulai expressed his concern over the engagement of casual health workers by the Asamankese Municipal Hospital because of shortage of qualified personnel. “Because of prevailing conditions, training of more nurses would not only meet the needs of government health institutions but those of private establishments and individuals as well,” he said.

Mr Abdulai said the Municipal Health Directorate was prepared to help the students with training instruments for their practical lessons.

The Programme Director of the college, Mr Emmanuel Yaw Appiah, said the institution, which was established in April, 2014, had received accreditation from the National Vocation Training Institute.

He encouraged fresh students to exhibit a high sense of discipline, dress properly at all times and make good use of their time by studying hard. He further urged them to attend lectures regularly and take their school assignments seriously.

Mr Appiah also entreated the students to be law-abiding since the authorities would not tolerate any form of negative acts that would bring the reputation of the college into disrepute.

He said students would be given opportunity to embark on clinical attachments in various hospitals and care homes in preparation for their external examination.

Mr Appiah said through the efforts of the Board Chairman of the college, Mr George Aboagye Okyere, the institution had taken delivery of training equipment from the Akrow-Aged-Life Foundation in Denmark.

The items received included five electronic beds, five mattresses, five wheelchairs, 15 sets of computers, two hoists, five bicycles and a quantity of nursing uniforms.

The Principal of the college, Mrs Janet Okyere, appealed to the government to absorb trained health personnel from private health institutions into the public system as a means of solving the unemployment situation in the country.

Mr Israel Boni, the Principal Training Officer of the National Vocational Training Institute, administered the matriculation oath
