Oti Boaten SHS attains academic excellence

The oti Boaten Senior High School in Koforidua has for two consecutive years, 2012 and 2013, scored 100 per cent pass in the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In 2013 when the school presented two batches of finalists totalling 1090 to the WASSCE, 786 passed in eight subjects, 294 in seven subjects, while nine passed in six subjects.

The school, which was established 23 years ago, now rubs shoulders with the best schools in the Eastern Region in terms of academic performance and sports. It excelled in soccer, basketball, hockey, volleyball, and table tennis at the regional level.

Headmistress

Delivering her speech at the 6th speech and prize-giving day of the school, the headmistress,  Miss Ama Adu-Labi, attributed the high academic performance of the students to the enforcement of discipline which made both students and tutors play their expected roles.

The event, on the theme, “Putting Education in its Right Perspective: The Role of Stakeholders,” brought together past students, parents and traditional rulers in New Juaben, led by the Paramount Chief, Daasebre (Professor) Oti Boateng.

The headmistress said the school’s academic performance would have been further enhanced had it not been for a number of challenges.

According to her, the assembly hall can hardly contain the students while the dining hall is so small that students have to take their meals in turns. Classrooms have also been converted to dormitories for both boys and girls.

Miss Adu-Labi, who indicated that the school also needed additional classrooms, appealed to the government to complete a 12-unit classroom block being constructed in the school with the GETFund.

She expressed her appreciation to all those who contributed to the success of the school, especially Daasebre Prof. Oti Boateng.

The School Prefect, Master Gipson Owusu Amoah, was appreciative to the tutors for guiding students to achieve such enviable academic performance.

Guest speaker

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Cape Coast, Professor Dora F. Edu-Buandoh, who was the guest speaker, dwelt extensively on quality education and pointed out that contemporary education should focus on bringing technology, science and the humanities together to produce graduates who would be innovative and creative and have entrepreneurial skills.

Daasebre (Prof.) Oti Boaten said naming the school after him had placed a huge responsibility on him; as such he had been working with the school authorities to improve its infrastructure to transform it to be among the best in the country.

He asked management of the school to be creative to match current technological advancements, adding that it was only in that direction that the school would continue to excel, especially in academic performance.
