According to the Country Programmes Manager of UWG, Mr Charles Cobbina, the challenges of education at the community level were related to quality, governance and logistics, indicating that the UWG would, therefore, focus on providing students in some communities, especially those in the Zongos, the infrastructure, facilities and basic items such as stationery and school bags to enhance their education.

Mr Cobbina, who was introduced and welcomed as the new Country Programmes Manager of UWG in Accra last Friday, indicated that “we need resources from corporate partners, strategic and good leadership to make Ghana stand again by improving on health, education and financial stability of the country. I have to do this job with passion, and make it huge in the world.”

Educational investment

He said the organisation would advocate intensive efforts by the government in investing in education, especially at the basic level. “We are going to improve teachers’ collaboration with the traditional authority to understand that they play a key role in education,” he said.

He explained that the UWG would engage the media to help in its educational campaign and advocacy programmes to improve upon quality education in Ghana, saying that “all children in all parts of the country need a head start in education’’.

He called on all stakeholders to partner and focus on the attainment of quality education and entreated parents, as well as chiefs, to play their roles effectively in education in making Ghana a better place.

Zongo project

A member of the Governing Council of UWG, Dr Juliette Tuakli, explained the company was already improving the lives of people in the community, adding that they organised an educational programme at Nima which encouraged children who had never been to school before to enter school.

According to her, they were going to expand their educational programmes so children who went through those programmes would be equipped with marketable skills and could deliver on the job market.

Beneficiaries

Commenting on some of the beneficiaries of UWG programmes, she said Akropong School for the Blind was given educational materials and modules in helping them to learn, adding that Silver Star supported UWG to organise a series of educational programmes to mark the 2016 World Literacy Day in East Ayawaso as part of their sensitisation programmes in education.

Also, Japan Motors had supported schools at Nima, Chorkor and Akropong to strengthen their educational programmes to improve basic quality education.

She noted that Stanbic Bank assisted them to set up a corn milling centre at Gomoa Fette which was being managed by the village.
