Old Achimotans construct disabled-friendly washroom

Members of the ‘89 Year Group of the Old Achimotans Association (OAA) have constructed a disabled-friendly washroom for their alma mater.

The gesture, according to the President of the ‘89 Group, Mr Kobina Andah, was in support of efforts being made by the school’s authorities to prevent public health challenges in the school.

The washroom, which is situated close to the Aggrey Chapel on the school’s eastern compound, has ladies’ and gents’ sections, a specially designed toilet area for the disabled, as well as a urinal trough for gents.

“Presently, the washrooms on the campus are far away from the classrooms in the southern part of the school, as well as the Aggrey Chapel which also serves an event venue for members of the general public, so building the washroom in this part of the school was quite strategic,” Mr Andah said.

Overhead water tanks will be provided, and an existing borehole close to the newly constructed washroom will also be renovated to ensure that there is constant supply of water to the facility in line with the school’s bid to preserve public health on campus.

Mr Andah hinted that the ’89 Group would soon begin a campaign to raise the Ghana cedi equivalent of $50,000 as seed money for the construction of a new $300,000 chapel for the school.

“This is necessary because the student population has literally exploded, making the space in the Aggrey Chapel too small for comfort,” he observed.

He also pointed out that, “In 1989, the student population was about 1,500. Today, it is more than 2,500 and nothing much has been added to the existing facilities, hence the need for all stakeholders to keep supporting the school”.

The ‘89 Year Group, as part of activities marking its silver jubilee, collaborated with the ‘64 Year Group, which was celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, to organise the 87th Founders’ Day event held on March 1, 2014.

The ’64 Year Group also rehabilitated the Agricultural Science Laboratory, which was handed over to the school authorities on February 27, 2014.

The Headmistress, Mrs Beatrice T. Adom, thanked the old students for giving back to the institution that had helped to shape their lives, saying the completion of projects was timely as the facilities had come to serve a very pressing need.

On behalf of the student body, the Girls’ School Prefect, Emmanuella Essilfie, commended the ’89 Year Group, the ‘64 Year Group  and all of the school’s patrons for continually contributing to the running of the school.
