Before the competition, there was a procession of school children through the principal streets of Gomoa Afransi, the district capital to mark the day amid brass band music.

The pupls held placards with inscriptions “Know your HIV status”, “If it is not on, it is not in”, “Stop AIDS love life”, “Zero death zero infection”, let’s fight HIV/AIDS, among others.

At the end of the competition, Obuasi D/A JHS won with 18 points, Afransi D/A JHS placed second with 16 points, while Afransi Zion JHS had 15 points to take the third position.

Prizes were presented to each of the contestants from the participating schools, as well as a certificate to each participant.

In an welcome address, the Gomoa East District Chief Executive, Mr Isaac Kingsley Ahunu-Armah, said almost 28 years of discovering the disease, measures such as public sensitisation, education on the use of condoms, as well as counselling and testing, among other things, had been put in place to help fight its prevalence rate.

He noted that the estimated national HIV prevalence rate in 2013 was 1.7 per cent as compared to 2.0 in 2000 with the Central Region having a prevalence rate of 1.9 in 2013.

In an interview, the Gomoa East District HIV/AIDS focal person, Miss Irene Azaratu Karimu, called on the public to show love to persons living with HIV/AIDS since it was the most important thing they needed to help prolong their lifespan.

She advised the public to take the preventive measures seriously in order not be infected with the disease.
