North Dayi District Assembly inaugurates educational projects

The North Dayi District Assembly in the Volta Region has inaugurated six projects at a total cost of GH¢544,004.49 for the education sector aimed at stimulating better performance among teachers, pupils and students.

The projects are the construction of an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) centre, a kindergarten block and the rehabilitation of six classroom blocks for the Anfoega Catholic Hospital Primary School and the construction of a semi-detached teachers’ quarters for the Anfoega Senior High School (ANFOESEC).

 

Funding

Funding was secured for the projects from the District Development Facility (DDF) and the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

As part of the inaugural ceremony, a new Tofon 700 tractor donated by Zoomlion Ghana Limited  to support Youth In Agriculture in the district, was also commissioned on Thursday. 

Impact of decentralisation

In an inaugural address, the North Dayi District Chief Executive, Mr Stephen Timinka, said the creation of the new district had justified the decentralisation process because it prompted the rapid development of the district within three years.

He said it was a milestone towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) four as a district which sought to ensure inclusive and quality education for all and to promote lifelong learning.

Mr Timinka said the construction of a two bedroom semi-detached teachers’ quarters, was to achieve the objective of attracting quality teachers into the district through the provision of serene residential accommodation, to encourage strict control over students and maintain order and discipline in schools.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Dayi, Mr George Loh, said the people had cause to rejoice over the numerous projects that had been executed within the short time that the district was inaugurated, and added that,  a total of 22 projects were expected to be executed in the district  by December this year.

He said his efforts,  together with that of the district chief executive in the provision of facilities for schools, was aimed at providing a holistic education to the people.

Mr Loh advised them to avoid open defaecation in classrooms which had been a de-motivating factor for effective  teaching and learning in schools.

Commendation

Speaking on behalf of the District Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Mr Lawrence Agyemang, the Headmaster of ANFOESEC, Mr P T Atieku, said investing in education in the North Dayi District was exemplary and commendable and asked the people to patronise all facilities in order not to turn them into white elephants.

He advised schoolchildren to take their lessons seriously and desist from going into mining of white clay which was common in the area.

In an address, the chief of Anfoega Gblenkor, Togbe Kutor III, expressed concern about the attitude of some parents towards the upkeep and supervision of their children and also asked parents to desist from withdrawing their children from schools in the area for enrolment in schools out of the town.
