NGO organises fair for SHS students in B/A

The Headmistress of the Sunyani Senior High School, Madam Georgina Boakye, has called for measures to support students in second cycle institutions to make the right choice in the selection of tertiary institutions and academic programmes as they pursue their education at that level.

She said such measures were needed to enable students to properly chart their career paths and avoid wasted years during which they struggled in vain to fit into unfamiliar programmes in tertiary institutions.

Madam Boakye was speaking at the 10th Ghana Higher Education Fair organised by I-Texon Ghana, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), for students from senior high schools in the Brong Ahafo Region at the Sunyani Senior High School.

Hundreds of students and their teachers from over 50 public and private senior high schools in the region took part in the three-day programme during which they were educated on programmes offered at a number of tertiary institutions in the country.

Participation

Six tertiary institutions: the University for Development Studies, Tamale; University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani; Islamic University College, Madina; Ghana Institute of Languages, KNUSTFORD University College and DAAD Information Centre, Accra, took part in the fair.

They mounted exhibition centres which provided the students and their teachers with a chance to know programmes  these tertiary institutions were offering and their admission requirements.

Addressing the students, Madam Boakye observed that the institution of the Ghana Higher Education Fair was appropriate since it would help sensitise and educate students to make the right choices of higher educational institutions.

“I am optimistic that students who are here will be better informed and will no more make such choices out of ignorance,” she said.

The fair

The Director of Administration/Fair Director, Madam Charlotte Owusu, stated that her organisation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the National Council for Tertiary Education, had so far organised 23 higher education fairs over the years.

She explained that through such fairs senior high school students, teachers, parents and guardians were brought into direct contact with higher education providers, bank/education insurance providers and career counsellors.

Madam Owusu stated that by making information available, “we hope to attain an informed student body sure of their higher education options and, therefore, well prepared for higher education.”

Comments

Some of the students thanked the organisers of the fair for a programme to educate them on how to choose programmes at the tertiary level.

“We are now clear about the options available to us and how we can get admission to tertiary institutions that offer programmes of our choice.”
