Newmont hands over facilities to Akropong School for the Blind

Newmont Ghana Gold Limited has handed over two summer huts and recreational centres to the Akropong School for the Blind in the Eastern Region.

Constructed at a cost of GH¢41,278, the facilities are to serve as places for the students to study after school hours.

They will also serve as relaxation and entertainment places and as receptions where the students can receive visitors.

The facilities were funded with contributions of the employees of Newmont Ghana in line with the company’s Workplace Giving Programme.

Day of care

The handing over of the facilities coincided with the annual Day of Care commemorated globally. In Ghana, the day was marked by the United Way Ghana (UWG), a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

The annual Day of Care is a community-focused volunteer event where individuals and corporate institutions come together to undertake charity projects in communities.

To mark the day, staff of Newmont Ghana and UWG also introduced students in five schools in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions to a reading project.

Some volunteers also took students from the Akropong M/A Basic School, Salem Basic School, Anglican Basic School, Akropong Methodist Basic School and the Okuapeman Basic School through mentoring, coaching and career choices.

Workplace Giving programme

In his address after the presentation, the Compensation and Data Integrity Manager of Newmont Ghana, Mr Adams Kasanga, said the company usually collaborated with employees to undertake social intervention programmes in communities.

“Newmont’s Workplace Giving programme offers our employees an opportunity to demonstrate leadership in social responsibility and make a difference in underprivileged communities,” he added.

Mr Adam Kasanga advised the school authorities to regularly maintain the facilities.

The Senior Housemaster of the Akropong School for the Blind, Mr Emmanuel Onuma Tetteh, thanked their benefactors for the facilities.

He was particularly grateful to the staff and employees of Newmont Ghana for their time and the resources they expended on the projects.

Earlier, the Vice President of UWG, Mr Albert Wilson, talked about the organisation’s continuous collaboration with Newmont and other corporate institutions to give back to society “in order to put smiles on the faces of the vulnerable”.
