My First Day at School observed
Basic schools throughout the country yesterday observed “My First Day at School” programme to welcome pupils who are going to school for the first time or those being promoted from nursery to the primary level to mark the begining of the 2014/2015 academic year.

In Kumasi, Felix A. Baidoo reports that the Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Kojo Bonsu, visited some schools in the metropolis to mark the day.
The visit took the Chief Executive, who led a high-profile team from KMA and the Kumasi Metropolitan Directorate of Education to two schools to welcome the pupils.
Schools visited
They visited the Twumduasi Obeng Faith Experimental Basic School and the Duase Roman Catholic Primary School where the pupils were given exercise books and basic provisions.
At the time of the visit, the Obeng Faith Experimental Basic School had enrolled only three newcomers to Primary One while the Duase R/C had enrolled 63 pupils for Primary One and 35 for the Kindergarten.
Addressing the teachers at separate locations, Mr Bonsu called on teachers to offer their best towards the provision of quality education in the country.
Mr Bonsu, whose outfit has been providing major educational and health infrastructure in the metropolis lately, assured the teachers of the government’s readiness to provide the needed infrastructure and logistics towards teaching and learning at the various levels of education to promote the development of education in the country.
In a related development, the Municipal Chief Executive of the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) in the Greater Accra Region, Ms Rita Odoley Sowah marked the day by visiting some selected schools in the municipality to present educational materials and assorted drinks to the pupils, as part of activities for the 2014/2015 academic year, reports Nii Martey Botchway.
It was a time of merry-making as pupils who were attending school for the first time had the opportunity to interact with authorities from the LaDMA Education Unit and teachers.
Addressing the pupils, Ms Sowah, said the unit saw the need to pay a working visit to the schools within the municipality as a way of motivating such children to stay in school.
Items distributed
The pupils received items such as books, pencils, erasers and sets of crayons.
Ms Sowah advised the pupils to cultivate the habit of hand washing and keeping a clean environment to prevent them from contracting cholera and other infectious diseases.
She impressed upon the children to take their studies seriously and also be of good behaviour, saying that was the key to their success in school to become responsible adults.
