MTN project benefits seven schools

MTN staff replace blackboards at Bechem School for the Deaf.Pupils in seven basic schools across the country have benefited from career counselling and ICT training sessions through the MTN Cloud Services project.

The project, which is currently in its pilot stage, is aimed at using ICT to create a virtual classroom where students can participate in lessons being taught in other institutions.

After a period of two months, the project will be replicated in other districts where students in deprived communities can be part of lectures being organised in “well-endowed” schools.

As part of the project, the Osu Presby SHS and La Presby SHS in Accra virtually communicated.

The headteachers of two beneficiary schools – Osu Salem JHS and Star Basic School, Tema Community Five – expressed their gratitude to MTN employee volunteers, who assisted to make the link a reality.

In a speech delivered at the closing ceremony of this year’s ‘21 days of Y’ello Care’ at the Tema Call Centre, Mrs Amma Benneh Amponsah, the acting Chief Executive of MTN, said “teachers and pupils can now teach and learn in refreshed environments”.

Mrs Amponsah indicated that “there is more that can be done to improve education in the country,” saying that “as a good corporate citizen, MTN Ghana continues to invest in various projects in health, education and economic empowerment in the communities in which we operate”.

During the programme, MTN staff volunteered throughout the three business districts of the organisation, namely the South East, South West and Northern business districts where MTN contributed by undertaking projects.

Staff volunteers refurbished six school blocks across the country. They include Osu Salem Junior High School (Accra), St. Mary’s Anglican School (Takoradi) and the Rev Fr Lebel Basic School (Bongo-Lungo).

MTN employee volunteers also visited five schools for the Deaf, located at Jamasi, Bechem, Mampong, Savelugu and Wa. At these schools, MTN staff replaced the blackboards with white boards and also interacted with the students.

The “21 Days of Y’ello Care Challenge” is an annual community programme which takes place in the month of June across MTN’s 22 operating units within the MTN Group. It is aimed at encouraging staff to volunteer their services and resources to support community development activities.
