MP to make STEM education topmost priority

The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has hinted of making the teaching, learning and the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education as his topmost priority for the constituency.

This, according to him, was to ensure that many students in the area had the opportunity to pursue STEM to the highest level as it held the key to future development of the nation and the world as a whole.

The MP explained that the promotion of the STEM education would be done in collaboration with the Bosomtwe District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the District Assembly.

Dr Adutwum disclosed this in an exclusive interview with the Daily Graphic at Jachie in the Bosomtwe District of Ashanti Region, during which the MP outlined his vision for his constituency and what would be done to achieve the vision.

Lamentation

The MP lamented that due to the low exposure to the sciences in the Bosomtwe District right from the onset of their education, most students from the area who gained admission to tertiary institutions across the country do not pursue STEM.

He explained that the robust STEM initiatives was to reverse this trend and also make the Bosomtwe District a national model for STEM education, adding that, this was to be attained through the organisation of STEM workshops for students in the district every year.

“The teaching and learning of STEM courses at the junior high school level is going to be promoted seriously in all schools in the district to whip-up the interest and motivate many students to embrace the sciences as their first choice course of study”, Dr Adutwum added.

The MP cautioned that there was the need for all and sundry to embrace the teaching and learning of STEM since the jobs of the future would be found in the STEM fields, saying with the current development trend the world over, without STEM, it would be very difficult for nations to attain the much-needed development.

Appeal

The MP appealed for more of such students to be admitted to pursue the sciences since that was what held the key to development the world over.

Dr Adutwum said he would liaise with the various stakeholders of education in the area to undertake vacation classes for students in the various communities so that it would complement efforts being made in schools during the normal academic periods.

Stakeholders

Heurged non-governmental organisations, the private sector, philanthropists and all well-meaning Ghanaians to put their shoulders to the wheel towards providing the needed infrastructure and other needs of the education sector of the nation.
