MP provides free daily meal for BECE candidates

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona East Constituency, Mrs Queenstar Maame Pokuah Sawyerr, is providing a meal a day for the about 1,800 candidates taking part in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) in the Agona East District.

The gesture by the MP is aimed at boosting the morale of the candidates, who are mostly from deprived areas, to  have the zeal to pass the examinations in order to come out with excellent results.

As part of the programme, all the candidates are each being provided with a meal every day throughout the five-day examination period. They would be fed each day with meals such as rice and chicken stew, jollof rice and boiled eggs, kenkey and fish, rice and palava sauce, as well as rice balls and groundnut soup during the period.

Address

Addressing the students during a tour of some of the examination centres, Mrs Sawyerr, who is also the Deputy Central Regional Minister, said the gesture was in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s interventions towards improving the performance of students in the district.

She said most of the children came from deprived communities in the area and providing them with free meals throughout the examination period would serve as a morale booster for them.

She advised them to study hard and pass the examinations with distinction so that they could benefit from a financial sponsorship package she had instituted for first-year senior high students, which benefited 257 children in the district last year.

She encouraged candidates who were pregnant not to be daunted, since opportunity existed for them to further their education after delivery, and advised the parents of such children not to bastardise them but rather comfort them and support them so that they could continue their education.

Community Day School

Mrs Sawyerr drew the students’ attention to the fact that the district had fortunately benefited from the Community Day School policy, which has seen a secondary school established at Namanwora, to enable them to have access to secondary education.

She, therefore, urged them to take the examinations seriously to achieve their dreams in future.

She said by the initiative the government had brought second cycle education to their doorstep and that they should pass the examinations so that they could be good pioneer students of the school, adding, “I want you all to aspire to acquire higher education so that you could become responsible adults in future.’’
