MountCrest University reduces tuition fee

The MountCrest University College (MCU) has announced a reduction in tuition fee of up to 35 per cent for its law programme with immediate effect, in what the authorities describe as the university’s contribution to increasing access to legal education.

“I think the reduction in tuition fee will help more people gain access to tertiary education,” the Rector of MCU, Prof. Joseph Atsu Ayee, told the Daily Graphic in Accra.

He said the move was also the university’s contribution to the whole question of financing tertiary education in Ghana, which was a shared responsibility for all stakeholders.

Furthermore, Prof. Ayee said the idea of reducing tuition fee was to dispel the notion that private tertiary institutions were only interested in making money.

Competition

The MCU Rector said the reduction in tuition fee was also meant to make the university more competitive as compared to other tertiary institutions in the country offering law programmes.

“We live in a competitive world and so our fees must be competitive to attract students from both within and outside Ghana,” he said.

Prof. Ayee gave an assurance that the move “will not affect the quality of our programmes, staff and students”.

Rebate for First Class students

Apart from the reduction in tuition fee, the MCU is also granting students whose grade points fall within First Class division a further 50 per cent rebate fees.

Prof.  Ayee said the essence was to encourage academic excellence by students who would become the next generation of scholars.

He said similar financial gestures would be extended to students of public health programme being offered by the university.

The Director of MCU, Mr Kwaku Ansa-Asare, said the reduction in tuition fee was to pay tribute to the chairman of the MCU Council, Mr Ekow Daniels, who had always held the view that education should be accessible.
